Important NOTE: In this tuning guide for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, which is becoming more and more interesting in view of the falling prices (currently available from 359 euros), it is actually a compilation of three articles on the subject. If you already own the plus articles Tuning for Ryzen 7 5800X3D, Practice: Subtimings with DDR4 RAM for Ryzen 5000 and Ryzen 7 5800X3D: Cache test against Intel, RAM scaling with 5800X, the article is not worthwhile. The target group are owners of a 5800X3D who have not yet purchased a practical article on the AM4 CPU from PCGH Plus and want to get the bundle as cheaply as possible – you save 50 percent with this bundle of 3 compared to the individual purchase.
Tuning for Ryzen 7 5800X3D
With the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, AMD has succeeded in presenting the fastest gaming CPU for socket AM4 to date.In gaming mode, it offers performance comparable to the Core i9-12900KS with a significantly lower energy requirement. But while both the Intel opponent and the closest in-house relative, the Ryzen 7 5800X, are approved for overclocking, AMD has decided to equip the R7 5800X3D with an overclocking lock.We check to what extent more performance can still be obtained from the eight-core processor.
The special features of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D
The R7 5800X3D differs from all other socket AM4 processors in the presence of the eponymous 3D V cache.Specifically, it is an additional 64 MiByte L3 cache, which is attached via 3D stacking above the cores.According to Robert Hallock, AMD’s director of technical marketing, the company has not changed strategy, but Ryzen processors unlocked for overclocking continue to have priority.Rather, the overclocking lock has technical reasons: Due to the packaging technology used for the first time, one should not expect the same clock and voltage scaling as with other processors. While the Ryzen 5000 CPUs are designed for up to 1.50 volts (i.e. when boosting a single core), the limits for the cache are significantly lower, in the range of 1.30 to 1.35 volts.Since the existing leeway would also already be used, the decision was made not to increase the clock frequency or the voltage.
