There are some characters that continue to challenge Batman, and the Joker is undoubtedly one of them. But while fans around the world have seen many iconic portrayals of the Clown Prince of Crime, one of the most disturbing interpretations seems to have gone almost unnoticed. It is the Joker in The Batman (2022) starring Robert Pattinson. The Joker only appeared briefly at the end of the film – out of focus and behind bars. The scene was actually originally planned to be longer, but was shortened in the final version of the film. We have linked the impressive scene for you below. Who is behind this sinister depiction? And could this Joker be the next big antagonist in the upcoming sequel The Batman – Part II become?
Who is the man behind the sinister Joker?
The answer to this question is: Barry Keoghan. The 31-year-old Irish actor has been a big star ever since his Oscar nomination for his supporting role in the tragicomedy The Banshees of Inisherin (2023). But Keoghan had already appeared in high-profile productions long before his Oscar nomination. He played in the acclaimed arthouse film The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017) and was in the miniseries Chernobyl (2019). Also in Saltburn (2023) he convinced the audience, and his latest role in Bird (2024), which will be released in German cinemas in January 2025, is eagerly awaited.
Keoghan was originally for The Batman as Officer Stanley Merkel, but this information turned out to be false. Instead, he appeared towards the end of the film as the “Unnamed Prisoner in Arkham” who has a disturbing conversation with the Riddler (Paul Dano). Fans quickly realized that this prisoner had to be none other than the Joker – or at least someone who would later become him.
In a interview Earlier this year, Keoghan spoke about his role in The Batman and the enormous effort that was required for the elaborate Joker makeup. Although his appearance in the film was greatly shortened, it can be speculated that the role of the Joker in the upcoming sequel The Batman – Part II will be significantly expanded.

The filming of The Batman – Part II are set to begin in 2025, and it remains exciting to see whether Keoghan will return as the Joker. In an interview with Variety about his upcoming film Bring Them Down he left this question open and only answered laughing: “Let's see where this leads.” This could indicate that he is contractually not allowed to talk about his future role, which in turn suggests that he could indeed be seen as Batman's arch-enemy again. What do you think? Should Barry Keoghan return as the Joker or would another actor be a better choice for the sequel?
