Reader question
A reader wonders why his mobile is not fully charging. We answer.
Question: Have had a mobile of the Samsung brand of different models for the past 25 years – which I have been very pleased with – and have noticed something odd with my latest, a Samsung Galaxy A33. I have read in previous articles that the life of the mobile battery is extended if you do not charge your mobile more than 80%.
The strange thing is that the current mobile, the Samsung A33 (only just over a year old), after doing so with the charge for just under half a year can no longer charge to more than 80%, whether I monitor the charge and pull out the charger when the phone reaches 80%, or if I – when I see the charge has gone to 80% – let the charge continue another 15 – 45 min. Do you have any explanation for the strange? Have now bought a Samsung Galaxy S23 Plus and wonder what to do to optimize the new mobile battery and life?
Elias Nordling answers: It sounds like an attitude that Samsung has been turned on by mistake. In Settings/Battery there is a button called Battery Protection. You can turn it on and off but when it is on you can also click on it and get more choices. The maximum option where the battery is never charged to more than 80 percent.
The idea with this is important, if you charge your battery daily, it only has 80 percent capacity after two years, but if you never charge it more than 80 percent, it still has almost full capacity after two years.
But … what do you enjoy it if you never charge more than 80 percent? Then you have, like tied yourself to the capacity battery, gets when it is already getting worn out. Sure, if you are going to have your mobile 5-6 years you get a little more battery capacity over time, but then it may be better to replace the battery after half time.
Instead, I would recommend that you put your mobile on adaptively here, then the mobile phone does not unnecessarily charge partly by not continuing to charge when the battery is already full, partly take a break from charge at night when you sleep. Both help to keep the battery to keep its life span over time.
