The Wolverine in Deadpool 3 is a different breed

Hugh Jackman returns once again as Wolverine in the film Deadpool & Wolverine. It's the same actor, but it's not necessarily the same variation of Logan.

It is perhaps obvious to the fans, probably less so to the rest of the public: the Wolverine who will appear on screen in the film Deadpool & Wolverine is probably not the one that everyone knows. This is a new variant of Logan, which we discover in the context of the “multiverse”. Warning: the following contains spoilers.

There new trailer broadcast on April 22, 2024 contains lines suggesting that this version of the superhero has given up on assuming his role in his universe. This is what an agent of the TVA (Tribunal des Variations Anachroniques), a fictional structure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) which oversees the multiverses, suggests.

This Wolverine completely let his world down », we hear him say. Earlier in the trailer, Deadpool calls out to this Logan, asking him: “ Is that what you said when your world went to shit? » Clearly, things went wrong in the superhero universe, and he gave up.

There is another element to consider: the Wolverine we know from the previous films is dead. The feature film Logan, released in 2017, offers a dramatic ending to the superhero. However, this film, whose narrative takes place in 2029, is “canon” – that is to say, it is considered official in the X-Men cinematic universe.

Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool & Wolverine, confirmed this point in November 2023: “ Logan is hot. We love the movie. It happened (his death, Editor’s note). » It is therefore not this hero that we will find, even by imagining a sleight of hand (for example, going to find Logan from the film Logan before the year 2029, the year of his death).

A year earlier, in September 2022, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, who play Deadpool and Wolverine respectively, also indicated that Logan is hot. Ryan Reynolds also pointed out that it is “ totally distinct » and that there was no question of touching it. A statement which actually has a certain impact on the rest of the franchise.

The complicated timeline of the X-Men films

The cinematic continuity of the X-Men franchise is quite confusing to follow, but a consensus exists to consider that Logan is the end point of a timeline including X-Men: The Beginning, X-Men: Days of Future Past, X-Men: Apocalypse And Dark Phoenix. Therefore, the Logan of these films is not that of Deadpool & Wolverine.

This chronology is itself a temporal deviation initiated with the film Days of Future Past, which constitutes a sort of bifurcation. From this feature film, another series of films exists: X-Men Origins: Wolverine, X-Men, X-Men 2, X-Men: The Last StandAnd Wolverine battle of the immortal. All of this is grouped into a separate timeline.

It must be understood that not all Logans from these different timelines are the ones we will see in Deadpool & Wolverine, because these Logans have not abandoned their world. They have always stood against the antagonists who have arisen. Even in Loganthe hero ends up pulling himself together and resuming the fight.

To these arguments, we can add one last: the costume worn by the superhero. The yellow outfit has never been worn by Wolverine in any of the other feature films in which this character appears. It is also a way of symbolizing the unique profile of this mutant. This, even if it is always the same actor who lends him his features.
