The Witcher 4: Better, bigger, grander

The announcement that “The Witcher 4” has moved into the main production phase is, gives hope that we will soon find out more about the sequel. Since it was officially confirmed in 2022 that the project would be the start of a new trilogy, fans have been waiting for more in-depth news. For now, however, there are still big promises.

CD Project's new approach

Charles Tremblay, vice president of technology at CD Projekt RED, pointed out an interview on the studio's ambitious goals: “We're not getting any smaller or worse. So it’s going to be better, bigger, grander than The Witcher 3, it’s going to be better than Cyberpunk.”

According to Tremblay, the studio learned from the challenges of releasing Cyberpunk 2077 and significantly overhauled the development process. The game mentioned had huge problems on the last-gen consoles, so Sony canceled the title banned from the PlayStation Store for months.

A central aspect of the new strategy is an extended pre-production phase. Regular technical reviews are intended to ensure that the technologies meet the requirements.

Tremblay explained that these processes are closely coordinated with technical managers and flexibly adjusted as necessary.

More than 400 employees are involved in The Witcher 4

According to CD Projekt Chief Financial Officer Piotr Nielubowicz, “The Witcher 4” is the studio’s most advanced project. Under the working title “Project Polaris,” over 400 developers are currently working on the sequel, which will not only continue the successful series but also set new standards.

Game director Sebastian Kalemba is also optimistic: “New challenges are just around the corner. And it is the talented and hard-working people that make me believe that together we can make the coming Witcher saga a remarkable experience.”

The team behind “The Witcher 4” is not only the largest at CD Projekt at the moment, but also particularly experienced. Kalemba, who is already working on “The Witcher 3” and “Cyberpunk 2077” ultimately promises that fans will soon be able to find out more about the project.
