The visual improvements on PS5 Pro – comparison video

In the latest technology video, Digital Foundry shows in detail what improvements “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth” has on the upcoming PS5 Pro.

On the PlayStation 5 Pro, “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth” is Much betterAt least that was the conclusion of Digital Foundry's John Linneman. The technical video uploaded today shows exactly what improvements are included.

Several major differences can be seen

So far, almost exclusively games that already look great on the normal model have been presented on the Pro console. What about the latest “Final Fantasy” spin-off, which has a controversial performance mode? The footage in the video indicates a clear improvement. In some cases, the 60 FPS mode even seems to have advantages over the 30 FPS version.

Apparently PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution responsible for the significantly smoother performance. This AI-based technology takes a resolution comparable to the original and effortlessly scales it up – without compromising on image quality. Small imperfections can only be seen in areas with a shallow depth of field.

Monitor ghosting also no longer seems to be an issue. In addition, particle effects are not as muddy as on the standard console. And even distant foliage looks more solid and dense. However, pop-ins – objects or textures that suddenly jump into the picture – are still a problem.

These things already make a significant difference. Since the patch is not yet complete, there may be even more improvements in the final version.

Fans agree that there is a noticeable difference, but some of them point to the original Performance Mode, which was “just unacceptable, to be honest,” and say the reason for the visual discrepancies is Square Enix's lack of expertise rather than pro performance.

The comparison video from Digital Foundry:

Whether such a visual upgrade is worth the 800 Euro price is something players have to decide for themselves. For most titles, the difference is unlikely to be that huge.

If you want to pre-order, you can do so from September 26th. The PS5 Pro will then be released on November 7th, 2024.
