A long-standing fight

Godzilla x Kong is wreaking havoc and the monster movie is not about to stop. As a reminder, this is the direct sequel to Godzilla VS Kong by director Adam Wingard (Blair Witch or Death Note). While in this first film, the two creatures clash, notably to calm Godzilla, now they unite. The two titans must once again face a threat, to protect humans. This time, the film goes back to the origins of these fights and attempts to unravel the mystery of Skull Island. When it was released at the beginning of April, we could say that The New Empire made a resounding entrance. In American theaters, these are nearly 80 million dollars which were collected over its first 4 weeks. A very good start, which allowed Wingard's feature film to be one of the 5 best starts of the year 2024 in the country. However, you will see that Godzilla and King Kong didn't stop there.

Titanic scores

In just two weeks, Godzilla x Kong smashed the box office with recipes that exceed 436 million dollars in the world. In the United States, $157.9 million was raised over the same period. Unfortunately, the titans will not be able to stay in the spotlight for very long: their number 1 place at the box office escaped them in favor of the film Civil War by Alex Garland (Ex machina, Annihilation). At the same time, we could see it coming: if the first week was prolific, their revenues have already decreased by almost 50% last week. In France, the observation is approximately the same. Early on, Godille x Kong dominated the scores, overtaking Dune: Part Two. However, the blockbuster is running out of steam. In France, it lost more than half of its revenue in a week and even fell behind other films. Ghostbusters: The Ice Menace by Gil Kenan (The City of Shadows) and Kung Fu Panda 4 by Stéphanie Stine and Mike Mitchell, are now considered the star feature films.

These fierce monster fights have perhaps already tired part of the public, even if they should still make it possible to reach 200,000 million dollars in the United States. As for Warner Bros, it is already delighted with these results, since it has just added a new record to its list of achievements: with Dune 2, which it also owns, it is the first company of the year to achieve the milestone of a billion dollars raised at the box office. “Achieving this milestone at such an accelerated pace is a proud moment for the entire Warner Bros. team. “It’s a true testament to our pride in the best marketing and distribution teams from around the world, as well as our incredible creative teams and filmmakers who bring us great films,” commented Pam Abdy and Mike de Luca, Co-Chairs. and CEO of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group (via Deadline).
