The period of danger in the Polish energy sector – what does it mean? Can there be no electricity? PSE announcement

Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne has announced the periods of danger that fall on Friday evening – according to the PSE announcement. As we read on the Network’s website, the period of danger “is a signal only for the capacity market units to fulfill their capacity obligations during these hours”. “The announcement of the threat period has no impact on electricity consumers, unless they participate in the capacity market as demand reduction units,” explained PSE.

As we read on the PSE website, the periods of danger are to occur on Friday, 23/09/2022 at 7.00 p.m. – 8.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m. – 9.00 p.m.

PSE explanations

As we read on the PSE website, the period of danger “is a signal only for the capacity market units to fulfill their capacity obligations during these hours”. “The announcement of the threat period has no impact on electricity consumers, unless they participate in the capacity market as demand reduction units,” explained PSE.

PSE said that “the announcement of the threat period is due to the lack of a sufficient reserve in the system”. “This situation is caused by the failure of generating units and the low generation of RES, especially in the evening peak” – it was written.

“According to the contracts, as part of the capacity obligations, the generating units will have to provide an appropriate level of power in the system, and the demand reduction units (DSR) will have to reduce their demand. Suppliers on the capacity market receive remuneration for this” – explained PSE.
