After “Foamstars” did not achieve the desired success despite a Free2Play switch last October, Square Enix is now pulling the ripcord and will soon end the bubble shooter's live service.
In February of this year, Square Enix released with “Foamstars” a colorful multiplayer shooter for the PlayStation 4 and 5, which was obviously intended to build on the success of Nintendo's popular “Splatoon” series. But the plan backfired: just two months after the release, they broke “Foamstars” player numbers brutally. According to conservative estimates, 95 percent of the players were no longer interested in the foam party.
Possible rescue through Free2Play conversion
In order to avert a possible fiasco, Square Enix changed the “Foamstars” model: the original retail price of 29.99 euros was deleted and the Japanese introduced it instead free Free2Play system a.
The multiplayer shooter was now available for free download for all interested players with immediate effect. But even before the change, “Foamstars” was like that replete with microtransactionsso that the ratings from the press and players were rather mixed.
Square Enix is discontinuing live service
Accordingly, Square Enix now seems to finally be pulling the ripcord: As the publisher has now officially announced, they will end the live service for the game after the next season of “Foamstars” is completed. The servers have not yet been taken offline so that “Foamstars” can still be played, but there will be no new content or updates in the future.
The final season of “Foamstars” will be titled “The Party Goes On!” and will begin on December 13, 2024. The final line will finally be drawn on January 17, 2025, when the season comes to an end. For this reason, Square Enix will also make all previous season passes available again so that players can unlock items that they may have missed in the past.
By the way: “Foamstars” was available free of charge to all PlayStation Plus members when it was released. But even integrating it into Sony's subscription model couldn't help the foam shooter achieve the desired success. How long Square Enix will ultimately take over the “Foamstars” servers Discontinuation of live support It remains to be seen whether it will continue until the bubble finally bursts.
