With Civil War, one of the best sci-fi directors in the current cinema landscape is back: Alex Garlandwho has directed films like Ex Machina or Annihilation or written 28 Days Later and Dredd.

Civil War has been running in German cinemas since April 18, 2024 and currently has a strong average value of 82 percent Rotten Tomatoes show. The audience score of 77 points is not much worse.

Civil War is already breaking records

Civil War has been running in the USA for a few days and has already broken a handful of records there. Among other things:

  • With a budget of $50 million, Civil War is studio A24's most expensive feature film to date.
  • Civil War is the first film from A24 to reach number 1 in the US box office charts.
  • With $25 million in its first weekend, Civil War represents A24's most successful theatrical release.
  • None of Alex Garland's previous films as a director opened as strongly as Civil War.

You may already notice: Just by the numbers, things are looking pretty good for Civil War right now. Half of the budget has already been recouped, while the film is only now being shown in international cinemas.

The story and the trailer for Civil War

What is Civil War all about? The film takes place in the dystopian/post-apocalyptic USA of the near future, in which the United States has broken apart. The conflict escalates into brutal armed violence, with various factions fighting for dominance.

In the middle of the action, we accompany journalist Joel (Wagner Moura) and war photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst) as they complete a 1,400 kilometer road trip into the heart of darkness. Their goal: to interview the US President (Nick Offerman) before he is removed from office and possibly killed.
