Last week the so-called appeared Next Gen-Update for Fallout 4. Bethesda has upset many players because the patch can cause problems with mods. It is precisely these problems that have now led to two completely new mods being particularly popular at the moment.

What mods are we talking about? Take a look Nexus Mods Looking at Fallout 4's most downloaded entries in the last seven days, two fresh mods are at the top:

  • The mod takes first place Fallout 4 downgraders. It is used to undo the update to the next-gen patch.
  • The mod is in second place Steam Skip Next Gen Update. If the Fallout 4 version is not yet patched, it tricks Steam into thinking that the next-gen update is already installed.

With over 25,000 or almost 20,000 downloads since their release, the two mods marked in red are currently by far the top Nexus mods.

Why don't many PC gamers want the next-gen update?

The latest patch for Fallout 4 may cause the game to have problems that weren't there before. This is particularly the case when mods are installed, as can be seen, among other things Steam Reviews shows.

  • The popular Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) is also one of the affected mods. Since many other mods depend on it, this is particularly problematic.
  • Possible difficulties caused by the next-gen update can occur both when starting the game and after a certain period of time during the game.

Before the patch was released, Bethesda warned that there would be incompatibilities with some mods. Many fans are still annoyed about the handling of the PC version of the game. This also includes our author Peter Bathge:

Steam competition with fewer problems: Anyone who buys Fallout 4 from the game provider gog.com bought is currently not dependent on mods like the Fallout 4 Downgrader.

  • The next-gen update has not yet been released on gog.com. Like it in one official forum post That means it can be expected around the second week of May.
  • GOG also offers downloads of offline installers, which should make it easy to play Fallout 4 without the next-gen update in the future.

The GOG version of the game is just as affected by the general Fallout 4 problem that we show you in the following video as the Steam version:

What about a possible successor? There are no official statements yet, but there are new rumors.

If they come true, Fallout 5 would appear earlier than many previously assumed. On the other hand, Bethesda would no longer be responsible for this, but rather Obisdian Entertainment, the makers of the Fallout game New Vegas.
