The Highly Anticipated Next-Gen Console, PS5 Pro, is Finally Here

Like the PS4 Pro, the PS5 Pro should offer a certain jump in performance compared to its vanilla-flavored big sister. In any case, this is what Sony wants to highlight.

On the PS4 Pro, the Japanese giant had set up a label to indicate which games fully exploited the console's capabilities. We will find the same thing on the PS5 Pro, with requirements that tend to reassure about its capabilities.

PS5 Pro: the much-awaited next-gen console?

While the PS5 Pro is hopefully expected later this year, everything that characterizes it seems to have now leaked. The most interesting thing to know is of course its technical sheet, to know if the Pro name is usurped or not. On this point, we have two voices. On the one hand, its processor has an increase of “only” 10% in terms of GHz compared to the original console released in 2020. That is 3.85 GHz instead of 3.50.

However, the beast would offer much more interesting gains in other areas. With a 67% larger GPU, the PS5 Pro should be 45% faster. Same observation in terms of RAM, a priori 28% faster than the RAM of the original console. According to Sony, all of this combined would make this Pro model 45% faster when it comes to rendering speed. As such, the Japanese giant is introducing the label “Trinity Enhanced”, or “PS5 Pro Enhanced” for greater clarity. This will be used to indicate which games take full advantage of the technical sheet on the more robust paper of the PS5 Pro. To receive this famous label, the games must combine on the latter:

  • A resolution upscale to 4K
  • Constant 60 FPS
  • Adding or increasing ray tracing effects

A console that must prove itself

Games could also receive this label under the following conditions:

  • Increased target resolution on titles that run at a fixed resolution on the standard console
  • Increased maximum resolution for titles that run at varying resolutions on the standard console
  • Increased framerate for titles that target a fixed framerate on the standard console
  • Inclusion of Ray Tracing effects specific to PS5 Pro.

You will have understood, Sony finally intends to respond to players wanting games that are both beautiful and fluid. More than towards players, the PS5 Pro must also prove itself to developers. Some of them seem to be disappointed by its technical sheet. On the one hand, the “Enhanced” label could tend to reassure them. On the other hand, this means that a lot of optimization work will have to be done on the games for them to deserve to carry this label. According to Digital Foundry, the highly anticipated GTA 6 itself might not receive the name, since on paper it would not be capable of running at a constant 60 FPS. Practice speaks louder than theory, so nothing will be worth seeing the console in action. To do this, normally meet during the year.
