The mid-term facelift model is scheduled to be launched in October, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the BMW 1 Series. The facelifted 1 Series will be on par with major competitors such as the Audi A3 Sportback and Volkswagen Golf, both of which underwent major facelifts earlier this year. It is worth noting that both cars still retain the option of manual transmission, and the Golf also offers a diesel version.

However, BMW believes that a more streamlined range of models will make the 1 Series more attractive. In the UK market, the new 1 Series is only available in three configurations: 168 horsepower 120i Sport and 120i M Sport, and 300 horsepower M135i xDrive, the latter's four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine is slightly reduced by 6 horsepower compared to the previous model, all models are matched with a seven-speed automatic transmission.

As with the facelifted BMW 3 Series, the diesel model is no longer offered in Europe, with BMW citing part of the need to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations as the reason.

The biggest change to the facelifted 1 Series is its front face design: it is lowered, narrowed and more angular to create a more dynamic visual effect. The iconic double kidney grille has also been redesigned to be more similar to the style of the 3 Series. The new grille has added more modern elements and is decorated with diagonal lines on the edges. The M135 xDrive and 120i M Sport use a more simple horizontal black grille design.

In contrast, the rear of the new 1 Series has undergone relatively minor changes, with the main changes including new split taillights and a lowered rear bumper (the M Sport model uses a black diffuser design). These changes have increased the length of the new body by 42 mm to 4361 mm, while the other dimensions remain unchanged.

The interior is one of the focuses of the facelift. The most striking change is the latest BMW 20-inch curved display screen, which is controlled by BMW's OS 9 system and integrates the digital instrument panel and infotainment system.

The number of physical buttons in the new car has been greatly reduced, including air conditioning control buttons. These functions and most comfort control functions are integrated into the infotainment touch screen.

Interior materials have also been upgraded, with Alcantara available on the M Sport model, while new seats are said to offer better long-distance riding comfort.

The new 1 Series will cost around £2,500 more, as the range is reduced to three models and the SE entry-level trim is removed. Final prices have yet to be announced, but the new 1 Series is expected to start at £31,000 (about RMB 287,000) and the M135i xDrive will cost £42,000 (about RMB 389,000).
