If the Rog Ally Z1 portable console retains most of the performance of the Z1 Extreme model, choices had to be made to offer a lower price. And, it was the processor that lost two thirds of its graphics computing units in the battle. This AMD Ryzen 1 chip thus goes from 8 Zen4 cores to 6 and from 12 RDNA3 units to 4. For the most recent games, it will therefore be necessary to favor HD rather than Full HD, the performance being reduced by 20% compared to the Z1 Extreme. If you want to enjoy Full HD, you will have to turn to older games, and therefore less demanding. The other characteristics are the same, including 512 GB of storage and 16 GB of RAM, for these two consoles which are in reality portable gaming PCs. The Rog Ally Z1 thus adopts the design of a classic console with a weight of 608 g and can run PC games. Ergonomic, the button configuration is similar to that of an Xbox controller. Its 7-inch screen adopts a Full HD definition of 1920 x 1080 pixels and is associated with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. You can also avoid problems with image tearing and latency using FreeSync technology. Ultimately being a laptop PC running Windows 11, the interface is therefore not the most intuitive. Microsoft's operating system also doesn't really match with a portable console. Access to the game library is, however, easier and the presets more adapted thanks to the Armory Crate SE software overlay. Downside, you will only have 2 hours of battery life, or even 1 hour when the settings are pushed to the maximum.
Is this offer on the Rog Ally really good?
Despite its less efficient processor, the Rog Ally Ryzen Z1 remains a quality console/laptop PC. If its price is normally high, it becomes much more attractive with its reduction of no less than €200. A console like this under €500 is a good deal.
