The Amazon series takes on a real martial artist who has already shaken up Marvel and Star Trek

Blade Runner and its sequel Blade Runner 2049 are among the best sci-fi films of all time. However, the screen films by Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve had little success at the box office. Now there is another sequel, not as a film, but in series form.

Amazon ordered the TV series Blade Runner 2099 two years ago, for which it is now loud Variety the first main actor has been announced: Michelle Yeohwho played supporting roles in Everything Everywhere All at Once, Star Trek: Discovery, Shang-Chi, Tiger & Dragon and The Geisha, among others.

What is Blade Runner 2099 about?

According to initial plot details, Yeoh will play an aging blade runner named Olwen who is at the end of his life. Like K (Ryan Gosling) from Blade Runner 2049, Olwen is a replicant.

The plot of the Amazon series takes place in Los Angeles in the year 2099 and revolves around a young woman named Cora. It is considered a species chameleon who spends a life on the run and has already taken on a wide variety of identities. In order to give her brother a secure future, she is forced to work with Olwen as they uncover a huge conspiracy.

A launch date for Blade Runner 2099 has not yet been set, but perhaps we can expect a release on Amazon Prime Video as early as 2025. Filming has been underway since April, with Jonathan van Tulleken (Shogun) directing two of the ten episodes.

Silka Luisa (Halo) is responsible as showrunner and screenwriter, while Ridley Scott is personally involved as a producer.

Michelle Yeoh plays the lead role in two sci-fi series

Incidentally, Blade Runner 2099 is not the only new sci-fi series in which Michelle Yeoh has a leading role. The 61-year-old actress gets Section 31 her personal spin-off in the Star Trek universein which Yeoh returns as Philippa Georgiou.

Filming for Star Trek: Section 31 began in January 2024, so Yeoh currently has his hands full.
