The script will be written by Fran Welsh and Philippa Boyens, who were responsible for the first six films. They receive support from Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, who already wrote the aforementioned The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim. But it gets even better.
It will be directed by none other than Gollum actor Andy Serkis. He already worked as a director of the side shoots on the Hobbit films. Peter Jackson enthuses: “We have worked on eight films together and each time has been a fantastic experience. There is no one in the world better suited to tell the story of Gollum than Andy.”
