Tails 6.0 distribution upgrades to Debian 12 and GNOME 43

Formed release of a specialized distribution Tails 6.0 (The Amnesic Incognito Live System), based on the Debian package base and designed for anonymous access to the network. Anonymous access to Tails is provided by the Tor system. All connections other than traffic through the Tor network are blocked by the packet filter by default. Encryption is used to store user data in the save user data mode between runs. Prepared for loading iso imagecapable of working in Live mode, 1 GB in size.

  • The transition to the Debian 12 “Bookworm” package base has been completed.
  • The user environment has been updated to GNOME 43 (previously released 3.38).
  • Output provided warnings if errors occur while reading or writing to the USB drive used for persistent storage. It is expected that warnings about individual failures will allow you to notice problems with the drive at an early stage and have time to back up the persistent storage area.
  • Implemented automatic mounting of external storage devices. If the drive has an encrypted partition, for example, created using VeraCrypt, the user will be prompted for a password to unlock the partition.

  • Added protection against attacks on the system through the connection of malicious USB devices while the user is away: when the screen is in lock mode, Tails now ignores the connection of any USB devices. USB devices are activated only when they are connected while the screen is unlocked.

  • It is possible to switch between 4 design themes: light; dark; Light in night mode with warmer colors and less brightness; dark night theme with warm colors.

  • Making screenshots and screencasts easier. A shortcut has been added to the system menu to call the screenshot/screencast interface.

  • In the Thunderbird email client, the process of setting up an account in Gmail has been simplified – to access mail in Gmail, you now only need to enter authentication parameters.
  • Updated program versions: Tor Browser 13.0.10, Electrum 4.3.4, KeePassXC 2.7.4, Metadata Cleaner 2.4.0, Inkscape 1.2.2, Audacity 3.2.4, GIMP 2.10.34 and Kleopatra 4:22.12.
  • The gedit text editor has been replaced with gnome-text-editor.
  • The display of icons on the desktop has stopped (the GNOME Shell add-on responsible for this functionality has been removed due to problems with integration with new versions of GNOME).
  • The buttons for reliable disk cleaning (Wipe) have been removed from the file manager menu, since complete cleaning is not guaranteed for USB drives and SSD drives (for reliable erasing, it is recommended to completely overwrite all data on the drive).
  • The button for deleting metadata has been removed from the file manager menu, since the developers of the MAT2 library used for these purposes no longer provide functionality for integration with the Nautilus file manager.
  • The GtkHash utility has been removed from the base distribution, which, if desired, can be installed as additional application.
