Switch: magnetic joy-cons, backward compatibility… Update on rumors – News

The rumors about the Switch 2 keep coming, but they are (almost) nothing alike. After rumors surrounding the addition of a magnetic attachment for the Joy-Con, things are becoming clearer following a Facebook post published on April 23 by the Chinese manufacturer Mobapad. If the latter was obviously quickly deleted, the damage was already done and allows us to offer us a lot of details on the backward compatibility of the console.

Contrary to what rumors suggested last week, the current Joy-Con and their HD vibration system would be compatible with the new machine. It will obviously be impossible to attach them to the console, since they lack the famous magnetic system, but that's not enough to throw our controllers in the trash. Mobapad also claims that Switch game cartridges will be compatible with this new model, but that it will not be the case in the opposite direction.

The Switch 2 stronger than a fridge magnet

But how will these new controllers work in practice? Mobapad talks about “electromagnetic suction technology, controlled by electric current. » A phrasing that is close to the concept ofelectro permanent magnet (or EPM). The idea is quite simple, since it is a magnet that is activated by pressing a button, creating magnetism powerful enough to hold the Joy-Con in place, even when forcing it. Two new metal buttons named SL and SR should act as switches, without specifying whether they will have another function, in game for example.

The small detail that makes all the difference is that the electrical current used to activate or deactivate the device is only used for the duration of the action, therefore drawing completely insignificantly on the console's battery. The Chinese manufacturer states that the new Joy-Con model will have different ergonomics, with a smaller HD vibration system motor and a new button that will sit next to the Home key.

This Switch 2 would come with a new dock, still in USB-C, but with some design changes as well as a larger screen with a resolution of 1080p. In conclusion, the manufacturer describes the product as a refined evolution of the OLED switchtempering expectations about the revolutionary character that some might be tempted to give to Nintendo's next console.
