Surprise twist: Could this off-the-wall series make a comeback?

Subscribers had to say goodbye to a simply incredible series in the Disney+ releases from April 22 to 28, 2024. What if there was a season 2 after all?

The new Disney+ films and series of the week are almost all available. Mickey's firm must still add the feature film The Menu and the documentary Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Odyssey this Friday, April 26, 2024. These new releases were marked by the end of one of the most popular series important SVOD platforms. An original production which was crowned with success and which decided not to pull the string. But behind the scenes, things could evolve if an interview with the showrunners is to be believed.

THE Disney+ phenomenon series returning in the coming months?

Usually, Disney+ creates an event with its Marvel series, even if they are generally divisive. The fact remains that these are essential productions for the aura of the platform. But ultimately, the hit long awaited by the big-eared firm did not come from the MCU superheroes. No, the project that brought the video streaming service into the big leagues is Shogun. A series that broke all records by accumulating more than 9 million views on Disney+ in just six days.

Why such a success ? Perhaps because, or rather thanks to the book by James Clavell, released in 1975, which was used for the adaptation on Disney+ and which was a huge bestseller. The universe in Feudal Japan also attracted many people. But in the end, all this would not have mattered if the Shogun series had not been successful. However, the reviews are laudatory and unanimous. Will there be a sequel? Normally no. From the start, this was announced as a limited miniseries. “We love the way the book ends; that was actually one of the reasons we both wanted to do it. And we finished [la série] exactly in this place » said Justin Marks, one of the creators.

Shogun season 2 already in development? No but…

Shogun season 2 therefore seemed impossible, but a statement in the columns of The Hollywood Reporter now sows doubt. Would Disney+ executives try to convince the showrunners to go further and continue the adventure?

[À la question de savoir si une saison 2 de Shogun verra le jour ou non] I don't know. I keep saying that I want everyone to be on the same page about the book. I hope this is the case for viewers and readers of the book regarding the story and its outcome. I think if we had a story, if we could find one, we would be open to the idea.

But I don't think anyone wants to jump into this without real plans. And it's also a question of knowing what people want. It's not just about surpassing the book, but also matching what Clavell has created. I don't know if it's possible. I don't know if Clavell could have done it either.

As we can see, Justin Marks is much less categorical, but that does not mean that a season 2 of Shogun will see the light of day on Disney+.
