The impossible challenge

It's been almost thirty years since players of Super Mario 64 set themselves a completely crazy challenge: complete the game without ever pressing the A key. For the few who don't know yet, the A key is probably the most important in any Mario game since it allows the famous plumber mustachioed to jump. Most of the games in the license are platformers, logically, players are therefore forced to press the A key a large number of times.

And it is precisely with this idea that the ABC Challenge, or the A Button Challenge, was born in the early 2000s. Going against the main design of the game in order to complete it. An almost insane challenge, which players have attempted numerous times over the last two decades. And for the first time in history, a player has managed to accomplish this feat.

An incredible run

This time, it's official: the streamer Marbler has finally made the impossible possible by completing Super Mario 64 without ever using the A key once. An incredible feat recorded live. In the end, the player will have managed to complete the ABC challenge after more than 86 hours of play.

This run nevertheless has several specificities. First of all, it does not concern obtaining game stars and was carried out in the any% category of the ABC Challenge. What's more, Marbler has launched an attack on Super Mario 64 in the virtual console version of the Wii, the only one that would allow this challenge to be accomplished to date. However, the player did not reassign any buttons on his controller and indeed completed the ABC Challenge within the rules. It remains to be seen whether players will be able to accomplish such a feat on a 120 Star Run.
