Suicide Squad: Flop overshadows quarterly report

As part of the current quarterly report, those responsible at Warner Bros Discovery admitted that the failure of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” had a negative impact on the company's figures. Sales plummeted, especially compared to the success of “Hogwarts Legacy” in the same period last year.

Shortly after the release of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League,” it became clear that Rocksteady’s co-op title was not meeting the community’s expectations.

On Metacritic For example, the new work from the makers of “Batman Arkham” only achieved an average rating of 60 points. The user score was downright devastating at 3.5 points. Unsurprisingly, the whole thing led to disappointing sales figures, which Warner Bros Discovery has since also admitted.

As stated in the annual report for the past quarter, the failure of “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” overshadowed the business figures. The flop of the Coop title becomes particularly clear when compared with the same period last year. As is well known, Warner published “Hogwarts Legacy”, probably the most successful game of 2023.

Suicide Squad takes a big hit

David Zaslav, CEO and President of Warner Bros Discovery, commented on the development: “Unfortunately, the studio's first quarter financial results were overshadowed by the difficult comparison in Games. Especially after the great performance of Hogwarts Legacy last year and the disappointing release of Suicide Squad in the first quarter.”

Zaslav's statements were later reinforced by Warner Bros Discovery CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels. According to Wiedenfels, the difference between the releases of both games is in EBIDTA [Ergebnis vor Zinsen, Steuern und Abschreibungen] led to a loss of almost 200 million US dollars.

A development that has been apparent for several weeks. Back in February, Wiedenfels admitted a commercial failure. At the same time, he pointed out that the performance of “Suicide Squad” will lead to a difficult year for the games division.

Will those responsible pull the plug in 2025?

According to well-known leaker Miller Ross, Rocksteady and Warner Bros Discovery could draw a line under “Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” after the fifth season. As he claims to have learned, those responsible made this decision after the first season made it clear that the developers would no longer be able to turn the fate of the co-op title around for the better.

If the leaker's information turns out to be true, it would be over after just over a year. However, it should be noted that Rockstady has not yet wanted to comment on the rumors about the possible end of the Coop title. If official details follow, you will of course find out from us immediately.

“Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League” was released in early February 2024 for the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
