While other SVOD services have taken a lead in this area, Netflix does not yet have a very attractive offer for sports competition fans. With their new acquisition, however, they intend to get back on track.

Netflix puts on its jersey

Since the creation and growth of Netflix In French and international homes, the SVOD service has never really been known to be a preferred platform for sports fans. Yet while Netflix focused on seasons of Stranger Things, The Bridgerton Chronicles, The Witcher and others Heartstopper, other similar services have understood that sport is an area not to be underestimated. On Amazon Prime Video, for example, it is possible to watch a few football or tennis matches depending on the current competitions and their agreements with the licenses concerned. In order to catch up, Netflix has just acquired the rights to broadcast a few matches of the most watched sporting competition each year.

Fans of sporting competition will have understood this: you'll soon be able to watch some NFL games on Netflix. For the more novice, we remind you that the NFL (National Football League) designates the organization which organizes American football competitions each year in the United States, from friendly matches to the famous Super Bowl. Be careful, don't expect to see the entire competition on the SVOD service (or even its final) since Netflix has managed to secure broadcast rights for only four very specific matches: those taking place on Christmas Day. More precisely, you will therefore be able to watch the following 4 matches on Netflix:

  • Kansas City Chiefs vs. Pittsburgh Steelers – Christmas 2024
  • Houston Texans vs. Baltimore Ravens – Christmas 2024
  • Teams to be announced – Christmas 2025
  • Teams to be announced – Christmas 2026

This is not the first time that Netflix is interested in this sport

Knowing that these games are usually widely watched and that the first will even allow us to see the winners of this year's Super Bowl in action, it's a safe bet that Netflix has hit hard with this acquisition. Even if they are not really known for broadcasting live matches, the SVOD service is still not its first attempt in the field of sport, or even in that of American football. We remember, for example, the documentary series Drive to Survive (Formula 1), Break Point (Tennis) or Tour de France: at the heart of the peloton (Cycling), but also Quarterback documentary series dedicated to this very popular position in American football.

For those interested, the Quarterback documentary series allowed you to learn more about this very special sport through three iconic players: Kirk Cousins (Minnesota Vikings), Marcus Mariota (Atlanta Falcons) and the very popular Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs). If you want to prepare for the arrival of the 4 NFL games on Netflix, you can do so by watching this 8-episode documentary. If you thought that Netflix's new acquisition was a first step towards a massive investment in sports, on the other hand, you might want to calm your enthusiasm. In a press conference held recently, Spencer Wang (vice president of Netflix) has indeed confirmed that the goal was not to “make a big investment in sport” but simply to expand the service catalog with one-off events likely to generate audiences. When we know that the 14 best audience scores of 2023 in the United States were NFL games, we do not doubt for a second that their objective will be accomplished.
