They lure players to manipulated websites with fake offers for alleged beta versions, exclusive downloads or bonuses for pre-orders. Instead of the game they were hoping for, users download dangerous malware onto their devices that spy on personal data in the background or lure them into expensive subscription traps.
NordVPN security researcher warnthat the scams are becoming more and more technically sophisticated. For example, malware was discovered that cleverly disguises itself as a component of an Nvidia graphics driver in order not to be detected by common antivirus programs. Mobile devices are also affected – a fake Android app called “Grand Theft Auto 6 Beta” only shows a short video after starting, while in the background it floods users with advertising and redirects them to other dubious sites.
More than just viruses – accounts are also being targeted
The PC downloads of GTA 6, which can currently be found via Google search, for example, are about fakes. The game won’t be released until fall 2026. So there is still no finished version that is suitable for playing. In addition, GTA 6 was only announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. A PC version will initially be available not together with the console versions appear. There is also no official confirmation whether there is a PC version at all will appear.
