On the PlayStation Blog A new feature has been announced that will bring players together for a shared multiplayer session, even if they are not friends. The activation should take place during the course of the year.

Invitation via link or QR code

In the coming months, Sony wants to establish a new way for players to generate a link on their PS5 console or in the PlayStation app, which they can then send to other PS5 players via various messaging or social media platforms.

Once the recipient opens the link, they will have the opportunity to join your multiplayer session, even if they have not yet received a friend request from you on PlayStation Network. The process is consistent across all supported PS5 games.

How the whole thing works is demonstrated using the following image:

Sony admits that some PS5 games may need an update to ensure smooth entry into gaming sessions. We will work closely with developer partners to find the best solutions for these games.

Please note:

  • Of course, players who want to join a PS5 multiplayer session must have the respective game installed. According to Sony, PS4 games and other backwards compatible titles are not supported.

In collaboration with Discord, a widget for PS5 session invitations was developed and is continuously updated. It provides information about the status of the multiplayer session so that players can find out whether the session is still running before they plan to join.

A new feature will also be introduced in the coming months that will give players the opportunity to share their own PlayStation Network profile or the profile of another player in various messaging or social apps. Sharing is done by generating a link in the PlayStation app, PS5 console or web profile on PlayStation.com.
