Sony gives in to controversy and backtracks

PC gamers finally at peace to wage war

Via an official press release on X, Sony backpedals on its decision regarding Helldivers 2thus putting an end to the controversy which has taken on disproportionate proportions for several days.

Helldivers fans, we've heard your feedback on the Helldivers 2 account linking update. The May 6 update, which would have required linking Steam and PlayStation Network accounts for new players and for current players at from May 30, will not be implemented. We're still learning what's best for PC gamers and your feedback has been invaluable. Thanks again for your continued support of Helldivers 2 and we will keep you posted on future projects.

The review bombing carried out by PC gamers, which peaked at 273,000 negative reviews on Steam, finally made Sony relent. What has strengthened the demands is the situation of players from countries where the PlayStation Network is not available. The withdrawal of the sale of Helldiverse 2 on Steam in many countries, especially those where the PlayStation Network is not available, only made the situation worse and put the studio at odds with Sony. A faulty management which must be attributed to Sony and the Arrowhead studio, despite their good intentions.

This is good news for the defenders of democracy who will be able to continue their clashes in the galaxy. However, it is a big blow for Sony's image and for the video game industry, because this case could well set a new precedent. From now on, whenever the abusive nature of review bombing is questioned, it is likely that this story will be cited to justify such actions.

Example of an action that can go too far, the review bombing of the first Helldivers. Indeed, the title released 8 years ago is not affected by the mandatory connection to PSN, but still suffered a wave of negative evaluations. The CEO of Arrowhead also reacted to this subject.

It saddens me deeply that Helldivers is also being criticized due to the recent Helldivers 2 controversy. What's next? A review bombing of Magicka and Gauntlet as well? Other PlayStation titles? The original post was about Helldivers 1 – which is completely unrelated to the HD2 situation. HD1 does not have a PSN connection. So it doesn't make sense for people to target unrelated headlines. This is about Helldivers 2 and the PSN tie-in policy.

Now that the situation is resolved, it is hoped that the disgruntled will change their negative evaluations.
