Silent Hill 2 Remake: Main character apparently reworked

Shortly after the release of the first trailer for the remake of “Silent Hill 2,” the community criticized the portrayal of protagonist James Sunderland. As a recent update on Steam DB suggests, the developers of Bloober Team addressed the criticism.

In October 2022, Konami and the Polish development studio Bloober Team (“Layers of Fear”) officially announced work on the remake of “Silent Hill 2”.

Even though the majority of players were happy about the return of the legendary horror classic, the first trailer for the remake was not entirely without criticism. The players were particularly bothered by the portrayal of the protagonist James Sunderland. The main point of criticism: In the remake, James is visually too different from his original from 2001.

A criticism that the developers of Bloober Team have apparently also heard. A current update to the remake of “Silent Hill 2” on Steam suggests that the studio has once again lent a hand to the visual appearance of the main character.

The adjustments were discovered by the players themselves. The developers swapped the symbol of the “Silent Hill 2 Remake” in the Steam databases, possibly revealing James Sunderland’s new look. As a look at the snapshot makes clear, this is much closer to the original design from 2001 than the version of the protagonist we saw in the first trailer.

It should be noted that the image has so far only been available as part of the Steam update in question on Steam DB can be found. The James Sunderland version from the trailer for the horror remake released in 2022 can still be seen in the public product description of the “Silent Hill 2” remake.

James Sunderland's revised design ensures positive feedback.

However, this does not change the enthusiasm of the community, which sometimes praised the apparently revised design of the “Silent Hill 2” protagonist on platforms like Reddit. “Looks really good,” said one user. “The dark, deep shadow/shading under his eyes is now perfect and not too light. They also corrected the hair color.”

Another player commented: “I like him more now. We have yet to see it on video and with other facial expressions. But this is definitely an improvement. The old remake face was terrible. I’m so glad they listened to the feedback.”

Revealing the release date in May?

Konami and the developers of Bloober Team have not yet commented on the possible rework of James Sunderland. The two companies may provide clarity next month. Recently there has been a persistent rumor that we can look forward to a big PS5 Games Showcase in May.

According to unconfirmed reports, among the titles that will be presented to us at the showcase is the remake of “Silent Hill 2”. In addition to a new trailer and the first tangible gameplay scenes, the final date of the remake could also be revealed at the PS5 Games Showcase in May.

All that is clear so far is that the remake of “Silent Hill 2” will be released for the PS5 and PC in 2024.
