The capacity of hard drives continues to increase. Where a drive with a capacity of 8TB was considered ‘large’ a few years ago, you can now obtain disks with much larger capacity.
Seagate is now taking it up a notch and has announced that it has shipped the first 22TB drives to a number of customers. The drives use shingled magnetic recording to realize this large amount of storage.
Until now, the maximum storage for hard drives was 20TB. At WD you can get the WD Gold, with this capacity and at Seagate the IronWolf Pro. A 20TB Seagate IronWolf Pro currently costs about 600 euros. The use of the SMR/tile storage makes the new Seagate drive less suitable for use as a storage drive for day-to-day tasks in a NAS and appears predestined for archival purposes.
In the meantime, Seagate is continuing to work on Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording, based on this technique, it plans to launch a 30TB capacity disk next year and expects to reach 50TB by 2026 and 100TB by 2030.
