Satellite images reveal new Chinese nuclear submarine

Defense News published a satellite image of a shipyard in Huludao in Liaoning province, showing a new Chinese submarine. The picture was taken on May 3rd.

Geospatial intelligence company AllSource Analysis said the object in the image may be a new class of submarine being built by China. It has two distinct patches of green on the hull behind the conning tower, showing a cruciform rudder and possibly a shrouded propulsion system.

A naval expert told Defense News that he is reasonably confident that the submarine has a number of vertical launch system cells for missiles. Having submarines capable of launching cruise missiles fits in with China’s desire for long-range offensive strike capabilities, he said.
