Samsung's new folding phones are here and are supposed to catch up with the S24 in two ways

Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are the two latest folding phones from Samsung.

It's now become a tradition: Samsung has just presented new folding phones as part of its Unpacked event. The sixth generation of Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold will be launched in two weeks.

What is obviously particularly important for Samsung is that the two phones should be as similar as possible to the flagship S24 – and not just in terms of the chip used.

Because of course: AI is also part of the mix. Both devices will be equipped with the Galaxy AI functions presented at the beginning of the year.

In addition to the new phones, Samsung showed a lot more at the event. For example, you can find an overview of the star of the show, the Galaxy Ring. Of course, you can also read all the information in our live ticker:

When designing the display, Samsung opted for a 3.4-inch OLED front display (Samsung calls it FlexWindows). Previous rumors that the external display would not use OLED have therefore not come true.

Under the hood is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, the same model as the Galaxy S24. The chip is cooled by a vapor chamber, which is 60 percent larger than its predecessor. There is also a 4,000 mAh battery, which should ensure improved battery life compared to its predecessor.

For photos and videos, users can choose between a 50 MP wide-angle and a 12 MP ultra-wide-angle camera. The former offers two times optical zoom, while digital magnification of up to ten times is possible.

On the software side, Samsung mentions Photo Ambient for more customization. This will automatically adjust the screen layout and look to the background.

The Flip6 will be available in Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue and Mint, as well as in the online exclusive colors Crafted Black, White and Peach.

Samsung prices the two versions of the phone at 1,200 euros (256 GB) and 1,310 euros (512 GB).

Samsung has also fitted the larger and more expensive Fold6 with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. This means that the chip will be installed in all of the manufacturer's flagship phones. There is also a vapor chamber for cooling here. The battery is slightly larger here than in the Flip sister phone. The data sheet states 4,400 mAh.

The internal display is 7.6 inches and the peak brightness is said to reach 2,600 nits. In addition, there is glazing with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Samsung specifies the external display as 6.3 inches.

Exciting for anyone who plays mobile: According to Samsung, the Fold6 will support ray tracing.

There is a change in the form factor. The aim is to use a new, squarer aspect ratio that allows for a more natural viewing experience. In addition, there are straight edges and a thinner bezel, which should make the Fold6 lighter than before.

The current generation also aims to address a problem area of folding phones: the fold, i.e. the folding line of the phones, is now supposed to be much more robust than its predecessors.

The colors are initially limited to Silver Shadow (silver), pink and navy blue.

For the German market, Samsung announces the following Euro prices:

  • 2,000 euros for 256 GB
  • 2,120 euros for 512 GB
  • 2,360 euros for 1 TB

When can you buy the phones?

Both devices can be pre-ordered starting today and will be released on July 24th – in exactly two weeks.

The big innovation compared to last year is said to be Samsung Galaxy AI. This means that a number of AI features are built into the device or activated.

These include an assistant for summarizing notes or transcribing voice recordings, a translator for PDFs and messengers, AI-supported photo and video editing, and a live interpreter that is designed to benefit primarily from the multiple screens of mobile phones.
