Samsung to release 256GB SD Express microSD memory card with 800MB/s reading speed this year

Gamingdeputy reported on February 28 that Samsung Electronics announced today that it has begun providing customers with samples of its 256GB SD Express microSD memory card. The sequential reading speed of this memory card can reach up to 800MB/s. Additionally, the 1TB UHS-1 microSD memory card is now in mass production.

“The demand from mobile computing and on-device artificial intelligence applications is increasing day by day, and these two new microSD cards launched by Samsung provide an effective solution to this problem.” said Hangu Sohn, global vice president of Samsung Electronics Brand Storage Division, “Although “The memory card is extremely small yet delivers SSD (Solid State Drive)-level performance and large capacity, helping users take full advantage of demanding modern and future applications.”

Samsung's first SD Express microSD memory card

Samsung has launched a new microSD card using the SD Express interface, which it claims “provides performance comparable to SSD in a small form factor.”

Samsung said that traditional microSD memory cards use the UHS-1 interface and have a maximum reading speed of 104MB/s, while the SD Express series of products have a maximum reading speed of up to 985MB/s. However, so far, SD Express microSD memory cards have not been put into commercial use. .

Note from Gamingdeputy: SD Express is a new SD memory card interface that supports the PCIe Gen3x1 protocol (based on the SD 7.1 specification released in February 2019), with a theoretical transfer speed of up to 985MB/s.

Samsung says its SD Express microSD memory card has sequential read speeds of up to 800MB/swhich is 1.4 times that of SATA SSD (up to 560MB/s) and more than 4 times that of traditional UHS-1 interface memory cards (up to 200MB/s), which can provide a better computing experience on various applications such as PCs and mobile devices.

To ensure the stable performance and reliable quality of SD Express microSD memory cards,Samsung uses Dynamic Thermal Guard technologyclaiming to “ensure that the temperature of the memory card is always at an ideal level even if it is used for a long time.”

1TB UHS-1 microSD memory card

Samsung has stacked eight layers of Samsung's 8th generation 1Tb V-NAND on the new 1TB microSD memory card to achieve large-capacity packaging. The new 1TB microSD memory card has passed the test and is claimed to have six protective properties including water resistance, extreme temperature resistance, drop resistance, wear resistance, X-ray protection and anti-magnetic protection.

256GB SD Express microSD memory card to be launched this yearthe 1TB UHS-1 microSD memory card is expected to be launched on the market in the third quarter of this year.
