Ryanair faces allegations of breaching GDPR rules with its biometric verification system.

EU Travel Tech, an association launched in 2009 that represents the interests of global distribution services and travel agencies before the industry and public policy makers, announced on May 21 that it had filed two complaints against Ryanair for violation of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The first was filed before the National Commission for Information Technology and Liberties and the second before the Data Protection Authority (ADP), the Belgian authority.

A procedure for external customers

In the sights of the European association, the biometric verification system imposed on a specific category of airline customers, those who go through a travel agency and who therefore do not book their tickets with Ryanair directly. If the person refuses to undergo this procedure, they can choose to complete an online form (which can take up to seven days to be validated) or go to the check-in counter at the airport before their departure in exchange for additional costs.
