“Destiny” fans get replenishment: “Destiny: Rising,” a new sci-fi RPG shooter game, is released. PS5 players will be left empty-handed as it will be released exclusively for mobile platforms.
The announcement of “Destiny: Rising” marks another step in the evolution of the “Destiny” universe. However, Bungie, the creator of the franchise, is not acting as a developer in this project, but is leaving this role to NetEase Games. The franchise owner only oversees the project.
The collaboration is no coincidence: in 2018, Chinese technology group NetEase Games invested $100 million in Bungie for a game, which led to a minority stake and a seat on the studio's board. After Bungie was acquired by Sony in 2022, NetEase retained control of the mobile “Destiny” project.
Different modes and new characters
“Destiny: Rising” is set in an alternate timeline of the “Destiny” universe and takes players to an era after the so-called Dark Ages. According to the official description, it is a time when “humanity, supported by the legendary Iron Lords, fights against alien forces to secure their future.”
The game features a mix of first- and third-person modes that players can switch between – including six-player cooperative strikes characteristic of the “Destiny” series. The setting includes diverse environments such as the sanctuary of Haven, the icy metropolis of Jiangshi, and the arid expanse of the Red Sea Trench.
Another feature of “Destiny: Rising” is the characters. Players can look forward to familiar faces from the main series. There is support from new characters, each with “unique skills and a personal story”.
NetEase describes the game as an epic mix of “RPG and shooter” in which character choice and mastery in combat is crucial. Controller support is also available, so players can get started with the DualSense, for example.
Release and alpha testing
Destiny: Rising will launch as a free-to-play title, with the ability to unlock cosmetic customizations and potentially additional content through microtransactions.
The official release of “Destiny: Rising” is scheduled for 2024. It remains unclear whether the game will sooner or later also be offered outside of mobile platforms. However, Bungie and NetEase emphasize that the RPG shooter will “redefine Destiny on mobile devices.”
Further news about “Destiny”:
All “Destiny” fans who were hoping for a PS5 release will be denied “Destiny: Rising” unless they can tear themselves away from their console. The closed alpha test starts on November 1st. Registrations are now open possible on the official website.
