Game news “Uncharted is a wonderful game”, the creators of this Star Wars video game appreciate being compared “to the best”
“Uncharted is a wonderful game,” say the creators of Star Wars Outlaws, honored to be compared to this excellent license.
The “Uncharted” video game series, developed by Naughty Dog, set high standards for the action-adventure genre. Thanks to its impressive graphics, its simple and effective gameplay and its (very) endearing characters, it has attracted a large audience and received rave reviews. Even today, the franchise is considered the culmination of an “Indiana Jones in video game”. This reputation has led to flattering comparisons to other titles, including Star Wars Outlaws, the new open-world game developed by Ubisoft Massive. For Julian Gerighty, the creative director of Star Wars Outlaws, this comparison is an honor. According to him, being compared to a game as acclaimed as Uncharted validates the quality of the next title in the Star Wars universe.
The ultimate Star Wars game?
Star Wars Outlaws, developed by Ubisoft Massive, marks the first open-world game in the Star Wars franchise. Set between the events of “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi,” it explores a galaxy dominated by the Empire where criminal syndicates thrive. Julian Gerighty revealed that this historical period was suggested by Lucasfilm Games, allowing the Massive team to explore rich and diverse themes. Their collaboration facilitated development by providing a solid creative framework, while allowing the Massive team to draw on their world design expertise, as demonstrated in The Division and more recently in Avatar Frontiers of Pandora. Presented in more detail during Summer Game Fest 2024, our editors had the chance to discover Ubisoft's next title in more detail. You can already watch our Preview if you are interested in the game. Combat, infiltration and exploration, for us it is obvious that Ubisoft takes inspiration from Naughty Dog. However, it seems that the reality is slightly different…

A voluntary inspiration?
But Julian Gerighty explains that Uncharted is not the primary source of inspiration for Star Wars Outlaws. The vision of the creative director and his teams focuses on balancing a captivating story and a detailed open world, while integrating iconic elements of the universe it draws inspiration from.
(Uncharted) wasn't necessarily our reference point. It's such a wonderful game to be compared to, if you're going to be compared to someone, they might as well be the best in the business. Naughty Dog and what they do is absolutely brilliant
Star Wars Outlaws clearly differs from Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order and Jedi Survivor in its focus on exploration and its approach to gameplay. Unlike Respawn titles, where the player plays a Jedi wielding a lightsaber and using the Force, Outlaws emphasizes the use of the blaster and shooting phases, reminiscent of the mechanics of third-person shooter games. This approach is reminiscent of the gameplay phases of Uncharted, where exploration, puzzles and shooting sequences take center stage. However, we will have to wait until August 30 to determine if Outlaws lives up to the adventures of Nathan Drake!
