Retroplace: German video game marketplace has to close

After six years, the video game marketplace Retroplace has to close its doors. The operators are not ruling out a comeback.

Since the Magnavox appeared in 1972, a lot has happened, and not just from a technical perspective. Regardless of whether it is the Nintendo GameCube or the Sega Mega Drive, each of the past platforms still has a die-hard fan base today.

On specialized websites like Retroplace.com You can discover numerous accessories, solution books and of course games for the retro consoles. Now the operators have surprisingly announced that they will soon close the portal.

Retroplace is closing

The German platform will close on April 1st. Since 2018, dealers have been able to sell their games on the marketplace. A very special highlight is the large Retroplace database, which includes more than 170,000 games.

Using a simple barcode scanner, games can be advertised in a flash. In return, the operators of Upper Franconian SkinBaron GmbH charge 7 percent commission – but at least 50 cents – per sale. At the moment, however, visitors to the homepage are greeted by sad news.

“Dear community, unfortunately we have to close our marketplace due to the current situation on April 1st, 2024. However, we would like to emphasize that the use of our collection management is still possible free of charge. We remain optimistic and are working on being able to reactivate the marketplace at a later date. We thank our amazing users for their support and understanding.”

Retroplace does not provide exact details or reasons. The magazine Games economy has asked the operators for a statement. The platform was originally founded by Armin Hierstetter and Christian Corre. According to his own information, Hierstetter has no longer been part of the project since November 2021 after the marketplace was sold.
