In a recent interview, the developers at Bandai Namco Games addressed the question of a retro collection for the “Tekken” series. Director Katsuhiro Harada revealed why we shouldn't expect such a collection.
With the Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics Capcom announced in June another game collection which includes selected classic fighting titles.
After fans have repeatedly advocated for a “Tekken” collection in the past, players once again expressed their desire for a corresponding collection after the announcement of the “Marvel vs Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics”. Meanwhile, “Tekken” boss Katsuhiro Harada also took a stand on the issue.
According to Harada, we shouldn't expect a retro collection of the “Tekken” series, as the director and his team are convinced that there isn't too much interest in such a collection. Above all, the outdated 3D graphics of the various “Tekken” classics ensure that the titles age significantly worse than their 2D counterparts.
Do 3D fighting titles thrive on graphical spectacle?
In addition, according to Harada, many players of 3D fighting titles particularly value the graphical spectacle in addition to complex game mechanics. “It's different in 2D fighting games because 3D fighting game players tend to play the latest version,” continued Harada.
“Early on, it was polygonal character models that pushed graphics to the limits of what was possible. When you look at them later, they don’t look nearly as impressive as they did back then.”
“2D fighting games, on the other hand, don’t age as much graphically because they only consist of sprite characters. And that wasn’t the main reason people played it anyway,” the “Tekken” boss added. Project producer Michael Murray, who also commented in the interview, sees the whole thing in a similar way.
According to Murray, it might make more sense for the developers to take up modes from the older “Tekken” titles and pave the way for them into the modern era. Including “Tekken Force” and “Devil Within”.
The producer would also no longer play Tekken 3 today
“But I couldn’t imagine picking up Tekken 3 and playing it with friends over a longer period of time,” said Murray, commenting on the idea of a “Tekken” collection with older series spin-offs.
“So yes, there is a difference that we perceive between 3D and 2D fighting games in that regard.”
Harada and his team are currently continuing to work on updates and additional content to be released in early 2024 “Tekken 8”. Last appeared with Heihachi Mishima the latest DLC character for “Tekken 8”. Owners of the season pass can now access the old master.
Everyone else will have to wait until October 3, 2024.
