Remedy (Alan Wake) and Tencent cancel their multiplayer project “Kestrel”

Developed with funding from Tencent Since November 2023Kestrel“, the cooperative multiplayer game project of Remedy, was ultimately canceled. According to the designers, development was still in its infancy.

If its development seems very short, we must still remember that this Kestrel was a sort of reboot of an old project from the company codenamed Vanguard. So there were still more than a few unfortunate months of thoughts on the game. But we imagine that the small team size which was dedicated to it did not necessarily allow the Chinese publisher to see it as a particularly profitable investment.

Although no reason was given for this cancellation, it should be remembered that the gaming branch of Tencent is actually in a bit of a problematic situation. Desperate to find her “next big hit”, she recently made the decision to focus on her in-house licenses, and limit her external collaborations. With Assassin's Creed Jade postponed, the Kaiju studio closed before the release of its project, and now the cancellation of Kestrelit's hard not to see a vague pattern emerging.

It must be said that with a Alan Wake 2 who is not still not covered his expensesdifficult to be totally confident, which however did not prevent Tencent to appropriate close 15% of the company's shares (thus becoming its majority shareholder). In any case, this cancellation should not result in layoffs (or in any case, nothing has been announced in this regard at the moment). Developers should therefore be recalled to the main teams of Remedyeven if inevitably, the company's needs in terms of hiring will be revised downwards.

By dint of code names, we get a little lost, but keep in mind that it is not a question not of the famous project Condorthis spin-off, again multiplayer, supposed to take place in the connected universe of Control. He would still be alive and well, and we would not be surprised if the experience acquired by the developers on Kestrel could benefit him. Remedy therefore intends to focus mainly on its already existing franchises for the moment. And “existing” in the broad sense since the studio is currently working on a remake of the first two episodes of Max Payne.
