Release sooner rather than later? Microsoft apparently wants to speed up development

When will “Fallout 5” be released? Due to the current hype surrounding Bethesda's End Times series, the question arises as to how the brand can be further monetized. Microsoft also seems to be getting impatient, as an insider reports.

“Fallout” got with the start of the same name TV series on Amazon Prime a huge surge in popularity. He brought the brand back into the minds of players, created a new boom in players and helped older titles reach new heights.

The next game in the “Fallout” series cannot benefit. This is simply because the development has long been decided, but the release of “Fallout 5” – or whatever the title is called – will still be a few years away. According to rumors, however, Microsoft is putting pressure on it.

Fallout 5 could launch sooner than expected

$7.5 billion Microsoft spent in 2021 to purchase Bethesda parent company ZeniMax Media. Compared to the amount that goes into the Acquired by Activision Blizzard flowed, the amount sounds less gigantic. But it's a lot of money that has to be recouped through profits and synergies.

“Starfield” got off to a decent start, but was not to the high flyerwhich many had expected. “The Elder Scrolls 6”from which it finally a sign of life there was, and “Fallout 5” could fix it. During the “Fallout” hype in the coming weeks until the start of the second season is likely to subside, Microsoft seems eager to bring the next game in the series to market “sooner rather than later” due to the new brand relevance.

At least that's what Jez Corden from Windows Central claims Podcast The Xbox Two with Rand al Thor 19 (via Gamingbolt) revealed: “They are currently making plans to get the next Fallout out to us sooner rather than later.”

Which developer is used?

In 2022, Bethesda's Todd Howard announced that “Fallout 5” was planned for the period after the release of “The Elder Scrolls 6”. And even the last-mentioned role-playing game is still a few years away. The title could arrive in “2026 or later,” leaked documents suggested during the FTC case against Microsoft. Xbox boss Phil Spencer once expected a launch not before 2028, which in turn would have an impact on “Fallout 5”.

And the most recent statements also indicate a long wait:

If the gap between the big games remains, “Fallout 5” could even fall out of the decade. But Corden doesn't see that.

He knows that it is an incredibly vague statement. However, the question would constantly arise as to whether we will see the title this decade. And he believes that this question can be answered with “yes”.

Last but not least, the decisive factor is where and how broadly the production takes place. Regarding the developer in charge, Corden added, “As far as I know, they’re talking about it.”

There has been speculation that Obsidian Entertainment, known for “Fallout: New Vegas,” or an additional team at Bethesda Game Studios, where they are working on “Starfield” and “The Elder Scrolls 6,” could take responsibility. Nothing about this has been confirmed.

In the end, at least from a business perspective, the question arises as to whether it would have been more productive to subordinate “Starfield” to a new “Fallout” and to concentrate primarily on the established brands. After all, it is “Fallout 4” almost ten years old and published in 2018 “Fallout 76” takes a different and initially unpopular online approach. However, the “Starfield” plans also started differently. Only after the takeover of Bethesda the course was set and the game stayed there widely used PlayStation consoles remote.

Will Fallout 5 also be released for PS5 or PS6?

If Microsoft manages to accelerate the development of the next “Fallout”, the question arises as to whether the title would also end up on PlayStation consoles rather than a later release.

Unlike “Starfield”, this is not a new brand. On the other hand, “Fallout” is not a series with regular publications and is therefore a case-by-case decision – like “The Elder Scolls 6”.

Since the beginning of 2024, however, there has been a big question mark behind Microsoft's exclusive strategy. Upcoming new releases like “Hellblade 2” and “Indiana Jones” appear exclusively for Xbox consoles and PC. Other games, however lost their exclusivity.

In addition, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made it clear once again during the latest annual report that the company basically doesn't care on which platform players invest money in an Xbox title:

Profitability plays a central role here. Microsoft was recently able to increase gaming sales with its takeover of Activision Blizzard. However, the new division posted losses and that too Redmond's hardware business continues to collapse. A large portion of the paying customers has long been on other platforms.
