The surprise dissolution of the National Assembly and the early legislative elections are disrupting the electoral registration process.
Emmanuel Macron took many people by surprise on June 9, 2024. By announcing the dissolution of the National Assembly, he called on the French to go to the polls again. With the European elections barely over, many people may not have anticipated registration on the electoral rolls or a simple change of polling station.
Normally, registrations close five weeks before the election. For Europeans, the deadline was May 3. However, this time, the deadline would be too short for the administration. Indeed, according to Decree organization of legislative elections, the election will take place from the lists (…) as decided on the date of this decree “. That is to say… Sunday June 9, the same day of the dissolution.
If we then take the text of the law literally, it is no longer possible to register on a list or change your polling station to vote on June 30 and July 7, 2024.
Exceptions to still register on the electoral lists
There are several exceptions to this rule. Until the tenth day before the election (i.e. Thursday June 20), certain people can still request to be included on the list of their municipality. This concerns young people who will reach their majority, as well as all people who will be naturalized or regain their civil rights before this date. Transferred civil servants, returning soldiers and their families are also entitled to exemptions.
Please note, however, that young people are automatically registered on the electoral lists when they turn 18.
“ There is no additional deadline to register on the lists », confirms the Ministry of the Interior to AFP, relayed by South West.
The online registration procedure on the electoral rolls still remains open on the Service-Public.fr website (but this approach will therefore be valid for other future elections, not for the next legislative elections). It is possible to check if you are registered on the same platform.
