In the last week announced Sony the PS5Pro officially and gave us clues about the future development of the console market. On the one hand, the hardware specificationsthat the technical leaps in the console sector are becoming smaller and smaller.
Furthermore, the price of just under 800 euros in this country suggests, according to experts, that we will also have to expect may set substantial acquisition costsA scenario that Microsoft has already responded to in this console generation. As is well known, the Redmond company released the less powerful Xbox Series S alongside the Xbox Series X.
The low-budget console was launched at a price of around 300 euros and was intended to provide an affordable entry into the current console generation. According to reports Sony could, given the rising prices of the PS6 think about a similar concept.
Well-known leaker provides possible clue
The latest rumors about the PS6 were created by the well-known leaker KeplerL2. In the past, KeplerL2 has repeatedly attracted attention with correct insider information, especially regarding chips and associated technologies.
According to the leaker, two SoCs (System-on-a-Chip) are currently being developed for the PS6. To what extent this indicates that Sony is indeed relying on a two-console concept in the next generation remains to be seen, according to KeplerL2.
He has apparently not yet been able to find out any concrete details about the two SoCs. Therefore, according to the leaker, it is conceivable that Sony is planning a possible PS6 handheld in addition to a low-budget version of the console.
“There are two SoCs in development for the next generation,” said KeplerL2 about Sony's plans for the PS6. “I don't know if it's a Series X/S situation or a home console + handheld. But probably at least one of them will be affordable.”
Xbox Series S has been criticized in the past
As the last few years have shown, the Xbox Series X/S strategy had both advantages and disadvantages for Microsoft. With the low price of the Xbox Series S, the Redmond-based company says it was able to attract completely new players who did not previously own an Xbox console.
On the other hand, in the past, the weaker hardware of the Xbox Series S has repeatedly caused technical problems for developers.
The most prominent example is certainly the role-playing game released in 2023 “Baldur’s Gate 3”Here, for example, the hardware of the Xbox Series S meant that the developers at Larian Studios had to make additional optimizations. This in turn meant that “Baldur's Gate 3” was only released with a delay several months ago for the Xbox Series X/S.
Other well-known developers such as “Alan Wake 2”-Remedy makers pointed out that the Xbox Series S will allow game development from the start negatively affected. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether Sony is really willing to take a similar risk with a low-budget version of the PS6.
