Since this year, Sony Interactive Entertainment has had a management duo, Hideaki Nishino and Hermen Hulst, who take care of different business areas. While Nishino focuses on the platform, Hulst focuses on the studios.
Despite the double staffing, the SIE leadership has been rather rare in recent months. One of the rare exceptions is an interview with Varietyin which both CEOs stated the reason for this.
The product should be the focus
According to their own statements, Hulst and Nishino have decided on a management style at PlayStation based on the motto “show don't tell” or in German “show, don't tell”. The term stands, among other things, for a style in which managers don't just talk and give instructions, but also actively participate.
“It is important that we communicate our strategy,” Hulst explained on this topic. “But at the end of the day, I’m with the developers a lot of the time.”
Nishino sees it similarly, adding: “For me, the product and the content should be the focus.” He modestly added: “Who is the man behind the scenes who does this? It doesn’t matter.”
Many players are waiting for information
The “show don't tell” approach can also be applied to communication between PlayStation and players, for example through gameplay demonstrations and the like. But when it comes to the pure “narrative”, many people miss a clearly communicated strategy. So not much is known about the games that Sony wants to score points with in the next year or two.
At this point it would be desirable if Sony Interactive Entertainment or the two management people would do more public relations from time to time. Interviews that form an interface with end consumers have become rather rare.
However, there are plenty of open questions, especially after the “Concord” bankruptcythe Studio closures and the increasing PC strategy. Owners of the PlayStation VR2 virtual reality headset are also looking to an uncertain future. And the Availability of disk drives is shortly before PS5 Pro launch Another question that is of great interest to many players.
