PS5 Pro: CPU-intensive games only experience a moderate increase in performance

In a recent video, the technology experts at Digital Foundry discussed the PS5 Pro's CPU. Here the jump compared to the standard model of the PS5 could be too small to provide a noticeable performance boost in CPU-intensive games.

In the past few weeks we have received various unconfirmed details about the PS5 Pro. These include possible hardware specifications that the YouTuber “Moore's Law Is Dead” brought into circulation.

The data are said to come from an internal Sony document and were also published a short time later by well-known industry insider Tom Henderson described as real. According to the data, we can expect a performance increase of up to 300 percent in the area of ray tracing. The CPU performance of the PS5 Pro, on the other hand, “only” increases by ten percent compared to the normal PS5.

According to Digital Foundry, this means that the proverbial trees don't grow into the sky, even in the case of the PS5 Pro. We shouldn't expect large jumps in performance, especially with CPU-heavy games.

What about 40 FPS modes?

The editors at Digital Foundry went on to say that we shouldn't assume that developers will increasingly rely on 40 FPS modes for CPU-heavy games. On the one hand, the increase in performance of the CPU is far too small to ensure a performance jump of 33 percent in terms of frame rate.

This means that only titles that already run on the normal PS5 model with more than 30 frames per second would come into question here. However, it would make little sense for the developers to decide to implement a PS5 Pro-exclusive 40 FPS mode.

Therefore, the additional CPU performance of the PS5 Pro will primarily flow into graphical improvements.

However, the 40 FPS modes will still benefit from the PS5 Pro's better CPU in terms of stability, Digital Foundry added. Further details on this topic can be found in the attached video.

Enhanced label also for small improvements?

A report we received this week revealed that apparently so small improvements enough to give future PS5 titles the Enhanced label of PS5 Pro support. Higher resolution, more FPS or the activation of (additional) ray tracing effects were mentioned as examples.

The Verge's report talks about games that run at resolutions of 1280p to 2160p on the PS5 Pro, for example, but only reach 1080p to 1440p on the base PS5. In both cases with a refresh rate of 30FPS.

Since Sony continues to hold back from making a statement or even officially announcing the PS5 Pro, it remains to be seen to what extent the reports of the last few weeks correspond to the facts. If the rumors about the PS5 Pro are true, then the new console will be released in the second half of 2024.

This would suggest that the new console will be announced soon.
