What kind of drama was it for years if you wanted to buy a Playstation 5 at the regular price? In the pre-order phases before the PS5 release (November 2020), the servers collapsed everywhere and later you had to watch out for so-called drops for years: small sales windows that popped up at short notice on Amazon and Media Markt and were often over after a maximum of an hour – then they were Warehouse empty again.
This is completely different with the PS5 Pro (release: November 7th, 2024). The pre-order phase for the latest Sony console has been running in the Playstation Direct Store since September 26th, and it has never been sold out since then. The exclusive sale at Sony ended a few days ago, so you can now pre-order the Playstation 5 Pro everywhere. Same picture here too: On Amazon, Media Markt & Co. you can easily order the console. What's going on there? Is the PS5 Pro a slow seller?
- At Media Markt: PS5 Pro €799.99
“Sony doesn't have to worry”
The experts at Digital Foundry, who have already tested the PS5 Pro (video below), discussed this topic in their tech podcast. There are several reasons for what appear to be poor sales at first glance and that Sony doesn't have to worry. First and foremost, the Playstation 5 Pro is very expensive at 799.99 euros. Sony is not expecting tens of millions of PS5 Pro sales globally in this year's Christmas season, but is expecting tens of millions of PS5 sales overall.
The company is happy about every PS5 Pro sold because of the higher profit margin, but ultimately it's about expanding the installed PS5 base itself. In addition, the supply chains have improved significantly after the pandemic, so that hardware overall is no longer sold out so quickly.

Sony wants to make PS5 look like a bargain
It's certainly no coincidence that you can currently order the Playstation 5 (slim model) on special offer from Amazon or Media Markt. The PS5 Digital Edition costs only 379 euros instead of 449.99 (RRP), the version with drive only costs 479 euros instead of 549.99. The price difference to the PS5 Pro, which is also a digital-only console, is a whopping 420 euros. The PS5 looks like a bargain. And for anyone who can live with 4K UHD and 30 frames per second or a lower resolution at 60 fps, it probably is.

What does the PS5 Pro have to offer?
With the “normal” PS5 (Slim) you usually have to decide: full 4K resolution with reduced frame rate (usually 30 fps) or 60 fps with reduced resolution. With the PS5 Pro, Sony wants to resolve this dichotomy and enable 4K with at least 60 fps for all games – at least that's the theory. The other side of the coin: Sony charges 799 euros for the PS5 Pro Digital Edition without a Blu-ray drive. For comparison: You currently pay for the PS5 Slim without a drive from the cheapest provider Mindfactory 378.99 euros.
