PS Vita RPG returns as a PS5 game

“Freedom Wars”, once developed by Sony's Japan Studio for the PS Vita, is returning in a revised form. The dystopian action RPG, which is being re-released by Bandai Namco, offers optimized graphics and an improved gaming experience in the remastered version, according to the manufacturer. Of course, the online mode is also on board.

All expansions and 60 FPS

In addition to the graphical improvements already mentioned, the remaster will include all previously released DLCs. The increase in frame rate is particularly noticeable: while the original PS Vita game only reached 20 to 30 FPS, the remaster should run at a stable 60 FPS.

“Freedom Wars” will also feature a revised weapon system. Players can use special weapons, called “Thorns,” to not only defeat enemies, but also swing fluidly through the air and move flexibly.

The Panopticon, an independent instance in the game world, also plays an important role. Here, players collect authorization points through combat missions and can thereby unlock new rights with the cyborg guardians. These guardians are fully customizable companions that always stay by the player's side, both in the game world and in battle.

Multiplayer and cooperative modes

A big part of the appeal of Freedom Wars is the multiplayer. The ability to team up with up to three other players online returns in the remastered version. After the original game's online servers were shut down several years ago, the community can look forward to a revival of cooperative game modes. Alternatively, players can enjoy the single-player mode with AI support.

In addition, the game offers several difficulty levels that can increase the replay value. This should provide a suitable challenge for both new players and experienced veterans.

This is what the plot is about: In the distant future in which “Freedom Wars” takes place, the earth is almost uninhabitable due to environmental pollution. Humanity lives in gigantic prison cities, the so-called Panopticons. In this world, it is considered a crime to even be alive. Players take on the role of a convicted character who has to serve a 1,000,000-year prison sentence due to his birth and can only shorten his sentence by carrying out dangerous missions.

“Freedom Wars Remastered” will be released on January 10, 2025 for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC (via Steam). Below is the trailer for the announcement:
