It’s official: PlayStation players have to pay extra.

Sony has officially announced that the prices for the PlayStation Plus subscription will increase in a few days. In a tweet on With a 3-month subscription, the price increases from 24.99 euros to 27.99 euros.

These PS Plus subscribers are affected

In the tweet, Sony says that the price increase will apply to new customers in selected regions. However, you should assume that Germany is also one of these regions. There is currently no corresponding post in the PlayStation blog.

The good news: If you’re already paying for PS Plus, nothing will change for you. The same applies to the 12-month subscription and the more expensive PS Plus Extra and Premium levels. But if you change the subscription level (back to the normal PS Plus) or the subscription expires, the price increase will apply.

Why is Sony increasing the price of PS Plus?

According to Sony, the reason for the price increase is the “current market situation”. However, the PlayStation manufacturer doesn’t really make it clear what that means exactly.

As with many other price increases in recent months, the ongoing storage crisis is likely to play a role here too. Back in March, Sony stated that it wanted to focus on “monetizing the existing user base” in order to cushion rising console production costs. In concrete terms, this means that PlayStation players have to spend more money on games and other services such as PS Plus.

After such a statement, the price increase was only a matter of time. Still, it’s annoying to have to pay more without PS Plus improving in any way. In May, subscribers can at least grab the very good Nine Sols for their PlayStation library.
