Prince of Persia: Are the Dead Cells makers working on a roguelite?

Ubisoft is said to still be interested in bringing back its legendary “Prince of Persia” series in a big way. Another game is due to be released this year and is said to be in the works by the “Dead Cells” makers.

At the beginning of the year, the venerable “Prince of Persia” series finally celebrated its comeback and with great success! The 2D Metroidvania “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” received very good ratings from both critics and players and is therefore considered one of the first hits of the still young gaming year of 2024. If we are to believe a current rumor, this will not be the only release from the popular franchise this year.

The colleagues of Insider gaming want to know that we are currently working hard on another game that will be launched later this year. The title in question is called “The Rogue Prince of Persia” and is reportedly in development by the “Dead Cells” makers of Evil Empire. This is said to be a roguelite that will go into early access on Steam later this year.

In addition, the upcoming “Prince of Persia” game will continue to develop over time based on community feedback and will be improved bit by bit. There is also talk of “continuous free updates”. However, the colleagues have not yet revealed any further details about the game's gameplay in their exclusive report.

“The Rogue Prince of Persia”, similar to “The Lost Crown”, should rely on a stylized art style in terms of its graphics. The art direction of the title is said to be strongly inspired by Franco-Belgian comics, i.e. well-known works such as “Asterix” by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, “Tintin” by Hergé and “Yoko Tsuno” by Job and Derib.

Another Prince of Persia game is definitely in development. Work on The Sands of Time remake is said to be progressing well:

According to Insider Gaming, Ubisoft and Evil Empire are said to have had initial discussions regarding a potential collaboration during GDC 2019. “The Rogue Prince of Persia” has reportedly been in the works for the development team for four years. However, since this is a rumor so far, you should view this report with a little skepticism for now.

Evil Empire is still a relatively young development studio that was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in Bordeaux. The team is made up of, among others, former Motion Twin people, the main developer of “Dead Cells”. In the recent past, Evil Empire has mainly worked on various “Dead Cells” DLCs.

What is certain is that “Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown” will be released later this year about new content should be expanded. A few weeks ago, for example, the makers of Ubisoft Montpellier released four fresh outfits for protagonist Sargon as well as a permadeath mode and a speedrun mode with the Warrior's Path update.

Another update, Boss Attack, has been confirmed for spring, which includes a new game mode called Boss Marathon and additional outfits for our character. The third free expansion to the Metroidvania will follow in the form of Divine Trails in summer 2024, which will feature new combat, puzzle and platforming challenges as well as more outfits, amulets and other equipment.

A story DLC is also scheduled to be released later this year. However, Ubisoft has not yet revealed any information about this.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC and Amazon Luna.
