PocketBook Basic Lux 3 vs other readers

The Swiss e-book reader manufacturer has unveiled the latest version of its base model. Let’s look at what the PocketBook Basic Lux 3 has to offer and how its specification fares against rivals.

PocketBook Basic Lux 3 at a glance

PocketBook Basic Lux 3 is an entry-level e-book reader. It has a 6-inch E Ink Carta display with a pixel density of 212 PPI, gives us 8 GB of disk space, works up to a month on a single charge and supports all popular formats. It also has Wi-Fi, and all this has been closed in a device that is only 8 mm thick and weighs just over 150 grams. It all looks decent, but let’s confront this model with others …

PocketBook Basic Lux 3 versus its predecessor

Let’s start with how the PocketBook Basic Lux 3 differs from its predecessor, the model with the number “2” in the name. First of all, the usual basic screen backlight has been replaced by the SMARTlight technology. Thanks to her it is possible to adjust not only the brightness, but also the color temperatureand this allows for more comfortable reading in the dark.

The “Three” should also work better than the previous model because the amount of RAM has been doubled (now 512 MB) and the single-core processor has been replaced with a dual-core. Taking all this into account, we can definitely speak of a step forward.

PocketBook Basic Lux 3 against rivals

Due to the introduced changes, the suggested price went up – it is not PLN 375 (as in the case of the “Two”), but 499 zlotys. This puts it almost perfectly between the basic Kindle reader and its beefy version with the annotation Paperwhite. In terms of specifications, we can also talk about something in the middle. Anyway, just look at the table below:

Kindle (10. gen.) PocketBook Basic Lux 3 Kindle Paperwhite (5. gen.)
Screen: 6 Cali / 167 PPi 6 Cali / 212 PPI 6.8 drops / 300 PPI
Backlight: yes, solid color yes, with variable color yes, with variable color

Of course, the market of readers is not the only Kindles. The most serious rival for this new PocketBook will be the inkBOOK Calypso Plus costing around PLN 550. The devices have almost identical specifications, but the latter also adds Bluetooth connectivity and another 8 GB of memory for books, and its display is touch-sensitive. However, it is a bit more expensive, so there is enough space on the market for both equipment. And the decision – as always – is yours.
