Playstation 5: Sony: no major brand releases in the next 12 months

Sony is apparently putting on the brakes. Accordingly, no titles from existing major brands will be released for the Playstation 5 in the next twelve months. And PS5 sales also remain below forecasts.

Sony has just published its results for the last quarter and it appears that PS5 sales are currently slightly below expectations. Sony had actually planned 25 million consoles for the current fiscal year, which ends on March 31st. At the end of December, however, Sony only had 16.4 million copies and has now lowered its forecast for the entire financial year to 21 million.

What is much more bitter for players, however, is that we will probably have to do without releases from the big Sony brands in the coming months. After the recently successful Helldivers 2 with Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade and Until Dawn, there are still a few exclusive first-party titles coming out, but the existing blockbuster brands are looking very thin.

Sony Group President, COO and CFO Hiroki Totoki said: “As for first-party software, we want to continue to focus on producing high-quality works and developing live service games. Although there are large projects in “We do not plan to release major new franchise titles such as God of War Ragnarok and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in the next fiscal year.”

So we're going to have a kind of drought phase until the end of March 2025. Although one has to admit that the current financial year was not so well stocked either. Of the major AAA franchises, only Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was released, but it was also extremely successful with over ten million copies sold.

It doesn't seem to be hurting software sales. They rose by 3.2 million to 89.7 million units compared to the previous year. Digital software accounted for 66% of quarterly gaming revenue, compared to 62% last year. PlayStation Network's monthly active users reached a record high of 123 million, up 11 million from last year.
