PlayStation 5 Pro: Slim drive temporarily available (update)

The PlayStation 5 Pro cannot process discs by default. If you want to use Blu-Ray discs, you need the optional PS5 Pro drive.

Update from November 29, 2024: The coveted PlayStation 5 drive has been around since the early hours of the morning at PlayStation Direct* can be ordered – however, the quotas are always sold out quickly. It may be worth keeping an eye on the Sony shop. We have therefore 'upgraded' the traffic light color to yellow.

Anyone looking for a complete package of PS5 Pro and Drive interested: Otto sells the set for a fair €919.99* (while stocks last) – which corresponds to the total of the RRPs.

The current situation in German-speaking countries:

Update from November 27, 2024: Because of many emails and inquiries: Unfortunately, there is no indication as to when retailers will be supplied with disc drives again. The prices of resellers on marketplaces (Ebay, Kaufland, Otto) are still beyond €200 – so the surcharge compared to the RRP (€120) is significant.

The best chances are probably at the Sony factory outlet PlayStation Direct* because the stocks there were replenished again at the beginning of last week. But the supplies only lasted a few minutes. The drive is currently sold out there too.

Update from November 18, 2024: The PlayStation 5 Pro has been on sale for a week and a half – and there is still a measurable shortage of slim drives. After a long time, a quota was briefly available again on PlayStation Direct on Monday morning, but it didn't last long. The increase in the company's own factory outlet gives hope that Sony's trading partners will also be supplied with goods again in a timely manner.

Update from October 29, 2024: Even a week before delivery of the PlayStation 5 Pro, there are no positive signals from retailers regarding the PS5 drive. And it's not just a 'German' problem, because the 'Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition Consoles' is also out of stock in other countries – both from shippers and from PlayStation Direct. If you want the drive now and immediately, you'll pay around €220 on marketplaces like Ebay – almost twice the RRP.

If there is a silver lining, you can find out about it at GamesWirtschaft.

Update from October 22, 2024: The PS5 drive shortage is obvious – and is also confirmed by retailers surveyed. Unfortunately, there is currently no indication as to when the situation will ease again.

But one thing is also clear: There is no real need for action at the moment, because the PS5 Pro will only be delivered in two weeks. Prospective buyers can therefore wait for further developments in peace without having to accept exorbitant scalper tariffs.

The PS5 Slim Blu-Ray drive (which also 'fits' the PS5 Pro) is currently sold out from virtually all major providers.

Update from October 21, 2024: The PlayStation 5 Pro is a pure download and online console – after all, there is no drive installed as standard. If you still want to play games and films on Blu-Ray discs with the new Sony top model from November 7th, you will need the optionally available slim drive.

The catch: The €119.99 accessory is actually sold out everywhere – if contingents do come onto the market, the small quantities will be sold out immediately. On Ebay and other marketplaces, prices of €200 and up are charged (and paid) for the drive.

While the actual game console can be pre-ordered without any problems, there is a real shortage of the official disc drive – not only in German-speaking countries, but also in other European countries.

Will the drive come to stores in serious quantities in advance of the PS5 Pro? GamesWirtschaft asked Sony Interactive for an assessment.

Report from September 11, 2024: Sony Interactive will deliver the new PlayStation 5 Pro from November 7th, 2024 – pre-orders are possible from September 26th. The recommended retail price of the console is an impressive €799.99.

Externally, the new top model differs only slightly from the current series ('PlayStation 5 Slim'), which has been sold since the end of 2023. But under the hood, the differences are huge – and that starts with the generous SSD hard drive storage (2 TB). There are reasons for this: Analogous to the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, the PlayStation 5 Pro is designed as a pure download/online console.

In other words: it's standard no Blu-Ray drive installed in the PS5 Pro.

If you still want to use the existing games and films on Blu-Ray, you will need the official disc drive, as is also offered for the PS5 Slim. Demand for the drive has already increased significantly in the last 24 hours – individual retailers are reporting sales. At Otto*, MediaMarkt*, Expert* or Saturn* the model is available – however, the drive is currently out of stock at PlayStation Direct (as of 9/11/24 / 4 p.m. / only while stocks last / subject to early sales).

Installation is extremely easy and can be completed in just a few steps: Switch off the console, remove the cable, place the console flat on the table with the bottom facing up, remove the feet (if available), remove the cover, snap the disc drive into the opening provided and finally snap the cover supplied into place – done. The PlayStation 5 is then immediately ready for use again – no further intervention is required. The drive can be removed just as quickly and easily if it is no longer needed (Instructions).
