Pedophiles blackmailed by hackers using basic malware

Cybersecurity researchers have detected a malicious copy of a platform known to be frequented by pedophiles. The clone site installed malware that demanded a ransom from the target.

Some victims are less to be pitied than others. American media Bleeping Computer revealed on April 21, 2024 the existence of malware intended to trap people looking for child pornography images on the web. The MalwareHunterTeam research team has provided extracts of the malware, it is a fairly common pitfall on the internet.

Hackers have cloned the Usenet platform, an old network still used to access various discussion groups, forums as well as content, including child pornography. Usenet has regularly been targeted by the authorities for these gatherings of pedophiles.

Software developed to create panic

Access to the network is generally by subscription. However, hackers have developed a so-called free version, provided you install “CryptVPN” software. Once the file is unzipped, an image appears on the screen with an extortion demand for $500 stating that “ your life is ruined » in the event of non-payment. “ You were looking for material relating to child exploitation and/or child sexual abuse. You were stupid enough to become a pirater”, we can read on the screen. A note is also installed on the desktop. The link to a bitcoin wallet is specified.

This type of ransomware developed to create panic is quite basic and has been used by cybercriminals for years. Bleeping Computer points out, however, that sextortion of this type has become commonplace and that fewer and fewer people are falling for it.
