The gaming industry has been on the rise for many years, with lavish productions fighting for the interest of millions of players. As a result of the pandemic, interactive entertainment in the digital world has received an extra boost, which is reflected in higher demand and rising prices for many types of hardware. Now the analysis company NPD Group puts figures on the category of hardware for PC gaming, which in 2021 increased sharply.
The increase is in line with the trend that started as early as 2020, when customers spent as much as 62 percent more on peripherals and computers for gaming compared with 2019. In 2021, consumers put 25 percent more money on the category than the year before, which means more than doubled sales in two years. NPD Group reports that consumers spent $ 5.74 billion on gaming computers and peripherals last year, which is equivalent to approximately SEK 54 billion.
The majority of the total comes from sales of desktops, laptops and microphones, whose contributions increased by 38, 29 and 25 percent, respectively. In terms of number of units sold, the analysis company believes that microphones, screens and laptops are at the top, with increases of 27, 17 and 16 percent respectively. The upward trend also applies to time spent with the games, a figure that increased by one hour per week and person set towards the year 2020 – from 6.7 to 7.7 hours per week.
NPD Group explains the increase by saying that PC gaming continues to be a center for development on the gaming front and that games are available in many different ways. The company is also submitting a forecast for 2022. The forecast is that sales will fall by 4 percent in the future, as a result of the explosive increase that is excellent in 2020 and 2021.
